Tequila

Just as there are legends about the origin of the Sun, Earth, Man, and Corn. Tequila also has one of its own, Legend tells us that tequila arrived in a flash of divine inspiration. A group of tribesmen from the tequila tribe in Amatitlán, Jalisco Mexico witnessed a lone bolt of lightning strike an agave plant. The heat boiled the liquid inside and when the plant cooled down they tasted the nectar from the “piña” (the heart). However Tequila as we know it today was first produced in the 16th century near the location of the city of Tequila, which was not officially established until 1656. The Aztec people had previously made a fermented beverage from the agave plant, which they called octli. When the Spanish conquistadors ran out of their own brandy, they began to distill agave to produce North America’s first indigenous distilled spirit.
THE AGES, THE FLAVOURS

BLANCO – This is the closest you can get to the taste of an agave plant. The purest Tequila typically un-aged or aged up to two months.
REPOSADO – Slightly aged inside Oak Barrels for more than two months but no longer than a year the result is a copper or golden colour Tequila. This tequila is softer, sweeter and more complex. This is a good way to get into the world of Tequila.
AÑEJO – This tequila is aged for longer than a year and three. This is the tequila you sip in to let the aromas of wood and spices fill you with the taste from the gods. A delicacy that a few get to savour.
EXTRA ANEJO – This Tequila has been aged in oak barrels for more than three years and even up to ten taking on even more colour and flavour.
MEZCAL – is a close relative of Tequila. Comes from Agave just like tequila but the plant gets cooked underground in hot rocks and wood. That is why it is well known for its smokey flavour.
Tequila does NOT come with a worm, only Mezcal… So why the worm? The agave is the house of the worm and it is said it is as sacredas the plant. To eat it is a direct ticket to Heaven!

One more thing…Lime and salt ruins a premium tequila experience.

El JIMADOR FAMILY

The name El Jimador honours the men who harvest the locally grown agave plant. It is their way of life. It is their passion. These proud workers, whose skills have been passed down for generations, are the heart of El Jimador Tequila. It is their hard work and their proud dedication to craftsmanship – knowing precisely the right time when the agave is ready to be harvested – that is the inspiration. And, it’s to them that every glass of El Jimador Tequila is toasted.

HERRADURA FAMILY

The tequila of Herradura has a long history in the warm, dusty plains of Mexico. Founded in 1870 by Feliciano Romo, Herradura lies at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in the small town of Amatitan, the heart of tequila country. As the story goes, Romo was travelling across this area and stumbled across a horseshoe bathed by the sun’s rays and it was at this moment that he decided this was to be the location for his dream, which he named Herradura, Spanish for ‘horseshoe’.

TEQUILA FORTALEZA FAMILY

Tequila Fortaleza launched in 2005, so we are relatively new to the market, but we have over 140 years of history behind our brand.
Our great-great-grandfather, Don Cenobio, founded his first distillery – La Perseverancia – in 1873, in the town of Tequila, Jalisco.
Not only was Don Cenobio The first person to export “mezcal de tequila” to the United States, shorten the name to just Tequila, and implement the use of steam to cook the agave (instead of an earthen pit), Cenobio also stated that the Blue Agave was the best agave to use for production

Tequila Fortaleza Blanco
Crystal clear, Fortaleza Blanco reveals immediate aromas of baked agave and stone fruit. The flavour begins soft and sweet, showing classic citrus pith, cardamom, white pepper and minerals with a creamy, oily mouthfeel that is delicate, elegant and posh. The finish is clean, full and brisk with the touch of sweet agave, bold spice and crisp minerals. $13

Tequila Fortaleza Reposado
Aromas of citrus, caramel, butter, cooked agave, and sage. Flavors include cooked agave, citrus, vanilla, apple, earth, and cinnamon. The finish is long and rich, delicately spicy, and it has an oily texture the make this a joy to drink. $14

Tequila Fortaleza Añejo
Caramel, vanilla, butterscotch and cooked agave aromas practically jump from the glass in this highly-praised and perfectly-aged añejo. This tequila is so rich and complex that some people are even able to detect pineapple, peach, orange blossom, nutmeg, and raisin in the nose.
Once in your mouth, the full cooked agave experience continues with a thick and oily texture that coats your mouth in a very soothing way. Butterscotch, caramel, toffee, citrus, and hazelnuts are common flavours that people identify. $18

DON JULIO FAMILY

Don Julio González began his journey into the world of tequila in 1942 at age 17. He soon realized that to create tequila that stands apart, one must control every aspect of the process, from the cultivation of the agave to the bottling of the final product. He then established his distillery, La Primavera, and spent nearly forty years perfecting the craft that would produce extraordinary tequila with every bottle. At first, Don Julio only shared his tequila with friends. But soon word spread, and Tequila Don Julio quickly became the most sought after tequila in Mexico. Today, the world is learning what Mexico already knows: that it is passion above all else that makes great tequila.

Don Julio 1942 Añejo
